Rail industry

The rail sector contributes more than £2.5 billion to the East Midlands
economy and provides around 8,500 jobs supported locally in the region.

The region is home to a number of major global brands. This includes; Bombardier, the UK’s only major rolling stock manufacturer; Siemens Transportation, which has its UK HQ in the region as well as a specialist control and information systems operation; East Midlands Trains, one of the UK’s major passenger train companies; and Network Rail, which provides the UK’s rail infrastructure.

Other major assets in the region include:
  • DeltaRail, a specialist software and technology provider
  • Interfleet Technology, an international rail technology consultancy group 
  • Atkins Rail, global experts in both the mass transit and heavy rail markets 
  • Derby & Derbyshire Rail Forum, which promotes the area as a world-class centre of rail excellence
Recent investments
  • Siemens Transportation has invested £31 million into a state-of-the art rail maintenance facility in Northamptonshire to service Class 350 Desiro trains operating on the West Coast Mainline.
  • Sydac, an Australian company specialising in train driver simulators, has opened a new facility in Derby to harness the exceptional buoyancy of the UK rolling stock market
